Poor functional capacity is associated with increased risk of perioperative complications.15Patients unable to perform workloads of 4 METs or greater, such as walking up a hill or climbing 2 or more flights of stairs, have a 2-fold increased risk of perioperative cardiovascular complications compared with those who are able (9.6% vs 5.2%, respectively;P = .04).15Among 1396 patients, the quantitative Duke Activity Status Index, derived from a validated questionnaire assessing functional capacity (range, 0-58.2; higher values indicate greater functionality),40was independently associated with death or myocardial infarction in 28 patients (2%) within 30 days of surgery (adjusted OR, 0.91 [95% CI, 0.83-0.99]) for every 3.5 points on the index; however, theabsolute event rates corresponding to the ORs were not available).
