Discussion: William Schutz argues that individuals have three Fundamental Interpersonal Relationship Orientation (FIRO) needs: Inclusion, Control, and Affection. He also states that each individual Expresses and Wants these three needs at different levels. You have just completed the FIRO-B test will help paint a picture of how you compare to other individuals in the amount to which you express and want each of these three needs. So the FIRO score can help us to better understand ourselves as individual communicators.
In addition, you can compare your expression of and want for these needs with the expression of and want for these needs in your relational partners. When you do this kind of dyadic analysis, you can predict where a particular dyad might complement one another, and also predict where the dyad might experience challenges. For example, If person A expresses control at a high level, but person B wants control at a low level, the dyad might experience a conflict when person A tries to exert control over person B, and person B does not like that. However, if person A expresses control at a high level, and Person C wants control at a high level, then that dyad might complement one another and they could get along in that area. When conducting dyadic analysis, one must consider how the expression of one need matches up with the wanting of that need in the other person, and vice versa.
Finally, the FIRO concept can be used to construct ideals. For example, if I was hiring someone to be a manager in my company, I might look for someone who can express control at a high level and wants control at a moderate level. It might be important that they express control at a high level so they can supervise others, and that they want control at a moderate level so that others can?t manipulate them but they might be open to my input when needed. You could construct ideal needs for any position or role.
