Graphical Abstract. Epstein-Barr virus infection induces the upregulation of glycolysis in intestinal macrophages, which subsequently activates Gasdermin D, NLRP3, interleukin-1β, and interleukin-18 in macrophages within colonic tissues. The release of these pro-inflammatory cytokines results in intestinal barrier dysfunction and exacerbates ulcerative colitis.
