The rate of inflation of the lung as a whole is a function of inflation pressure, compliance and airway resistance. It is convenient to think in terms of the time constant (explained in Appendix E), which is the product of the compliance and resistance and is (1) the time required for inflation to 63% of the final volume attained if inflation is prolonged indefinitely or (2) the time that would be required for inflation of the lungs if the initial gas flow rate were maintained throughout inflation
