WORKUP
• History regarding symptoms, hygiene practices, exposures to known irritants
• Examination, including Tanner staging, pelvic/genital examination; possibly speculum examination
• May need rectal examination.
• Knee-chest position for examination may be easier for the child to tolerate. May need to consider exam under anesthesia for more thorough evaluation if necessary.
• KOH and normal saline preparation of discharge
• Vaginoscopy if considering a foreign body
