医学翻译常见错例及分析(3):理解原文

前言：医学翻译属于翻译的范畴，翻译能力依然是最基础最重要的。语言水平不过关，不懂翻译处理的思路，医学专业背景再强大，也很难做好医学翻译。

“理解原文是整个翻译过程的第一步。这是最关键、也是最容易出问题的一步……大部分的翻译错误都起因于译者的理解错误。没有正确的理解，翻译者传达的就不是原作的意思，翻译活动就从根本上失去了意义。

理解原文并不像一些初习翻译的人和读者想象得那么容易。实际翻译中，在最难理解问题的地方，却偏偏会出问题。”

以下是审校论文时遇到的几个错译实例。

1.原文：静脉用药集中调配中心是根据药物的特性设计工作环境，依靠先进的管理理念，由受过培训的专业人员组成，按照严格的操作规范进行药物配置。

原译：PIVAS, based on the characteristics of drugs to design the working environment, relies on advanced management concepts, and is composed of trained professionals. It is used for the dispensing of drugs according to strict operation specifications. 

分析：这句话原文实际上主要是说有着某种 “工作环境”、“管理理念”、“专业人员” 和 “操作规范” 的调配中心来进行药物配制。当然这种修饰成分比较多的句子如果直接串下来会比较长，需要合理拆分。

我们可以看到，由于修饰成分较多，原文未把这种逻辑关系描述清楚，而翻译也没有理解原文的逻辑，纯粹跟着原文字面走，意思层次就比较混乱。

像 “依靠先进的管理理念，由受过培训的专业人员组成” 这样的话基本都是起到修饰作用的成分，直接处理成独立的主要成分的话，与其在原文中的作用不太相符，还是应该尽量处理为从属成分。

参考修改版本: The Pharmacy Intravenous Admixture Services (PIVAS) is designed based on the characteristics of drugs and managed with advanced concepts. It is used for the dispensing of drugs by trained professionals according to strict operation specifications. 

2.给药剂量与药物的治疗作用密切相关，给药剂量小，药物浓度低，达不到治疗效果。

原译：The dosage is closely related to the therapeutic effect of drugs. The dosage is small and the concentration of the drug is low, which cannot achieve the therapeutic effect.

分析：翻译中要注意理解上下文的逻辑，不能只翻译字面意思。原文说 “给药剂量与药物的治疗作用密切相关”。紧接着就给出假设，“如果” 给药剂量小，药物浓度低，就达不到治疗效果。虽然这种 “假设” 的逻辑关系没有在中文字面上体现出来，但在英文中是要明示出来的。

原译 The dosage is small and the concentration of the drug is low 像是在斩钉截铁地陈述一个事实，这跟原文的意思是相悖的。

参考修改版本：The dosage is closely related to the therapeutic effect of drugs. A small dosage and low drug concentration fail to achieve the desired therapeutic effect.

3.结合 3 个病历，分析新型冠状病毒肺炎河北地区的病机。另外，亦当注重顾护脾胃，注重中西医协作，优势互补，多角度发挥中医药作用。

原译：The pathogenesis of COVID-19 in Hebei were analyzed in combination with three cases in clinical practice. In addition, the spleen and stomach should be protected during the treatment and importance should be attached to the collaboration between traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine to complement each other's advantages and play the role of traditional Chinese medicine from multiple angles.

分析：同一个词语在不同情况下的意思是有差别的，在翻译成英文时也要体现这种差别。所以，翻译前一定要 “理解” 原文到底在说什么，再把意思翻译成英文，而不是跟着字面意思走。

首先，医学文档中经常出现 “结合临床（其他结果）”、“结合病历” 及 “中西医结合” 等等表述，但并不是所有情况都用 combine (in combination with/combined)。

看看英英词典对 combine 的解释：

Longman dictionary: 

 1. If you combine two or more different things, or if they combine, they begin to exist or work together.

2. to have two or more different features or qualities at the same time.

3. If two or more different substances combine, or if you combine them, they mix or join together to produce a new single substance.

所以，combine 基本都是把两者或以上内容放在一起的意思。但 “结合临床（其他结果）” 其实更偏向 “参考” 临床其他结果，而不是真的把现在的检查跟其他检查结果放在一起。所以 “结合临床（其他结果）” 更适合用 refer to。

而在 “结合病历” 中，例如原文 “结合3个病历”，并不是把 “病机” 跟 3 个病历放在一起，它们是没法放在一起的。这里的 “结合” 指的是在这 “3个病历” 的基础上做分析，用 based on 等就比较合适。那在 “中西医结合” 中，确实是把 “中医” 和 “西医” 放在一起，用 combined with 就非常合适。

第二，原译第二句话非常长，就是把原文字面翻译并且串起来，句子冗长又中式。实际上，论文是为了传递信息，语言应该尽量准确简洁。

参考修改版本：Three cases in clinical practice were used to examine the pathogenesis of COVID-19 in Hebei Province. The spleen and stomach should be protected during the treatment. Therefore, taditional Chinese medicine can be combined with western medicine to complement each other, giving play to the role of traditional Chinese medicine from multiple angles.
