Once anesthesia is induced, a non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent may be administered. In our scenario, we plan to intubate this patient while awake; therefore a rapid sequence induction is not required. However, if a patient is to be intubated after induction, a rapid sequence induction is suggested due to decreased gastric transit time resulting from trauma and the inflammatory state. Succinylcholine is used with caution in burn patients, and is discussed further below.
