Gout is inflammation caused by monosodium urate crystals. Gout is characterized by needle- shaped crystals seen under microscopy after joint aspiration. If a polarizing filter is used, the crystals are yellow when they align parallel but turn blue when aligned across the direction of the polarizer (negative birefringence).
