Epidural anaesthesia has a cardioprotective effect in those having atherosclerotic disease. There is increased plasma norepinephrine after surgery which increases the nitric oxide causing vasospasm in endothelium of atherosclerotic disease. Sympathetic block causes decreased cardiac output and thus decreasing the blood flow causing brainstem ischaemia.
