Book Description:
The Second Edition of this single-authored volume integrates multiple disciplines of basic and clinical research to help clinicians further develop the best possible care for the rehabilitation of patients with neurologic diseases. From the readable descriptions of the structures and functions of pathways for movement and cognition the reader comes to understand the potential for training induced, pharmacologic, and near-future biologic interventions to enhance recovery. Dr. Dobkin shows how functional neuroimaging serves as a marker for whether physical, cognitive, and neuromodulating therapis work and how they sculpt the plasticity of the brain. Themes, such as hwo the manipulation of sensory experience can serve as a formidable tool for rehabilitation, run throughout the text, built from the level of the synapse to behaviors such as grasping, walking, and thinking. From illustrating how we may one day repair the brain and spinal cord to how to retrain spared and new pathways, Dr. Dobkin draws insights from a broad swath of fundamental research to give clinicians tools they can translate into bedside practices. The book treats the medical complications and therapeutic approaches to neurologic diseases as an interconnected matrix. The management of common medical issues, impairments, and disabilities are described across diseases. Special problems posed by patients with stroke, myelopathies, brain injury, multiple sclerosis, degenerative diseases, and motor unit disorders receive individual comment. Short-term and delayed pulse interventions for patients, along with clinical trials, are dissected and put into perspective. The First Edition of this book was titles Neurologic Rehabilitation. The title has been changed to reflect Dr. Dobkin's sense that fundamental research now drives the field of neurologic rehabilitation even more than it could in 1996 when the First Edition was published. The Second Edition features entirely new chapters on functional neuroimaging of observations relevant to the clinician; and extensive updating and expansion of all chapters. Readers, whether clincians serving the rehabilitation team, or students or researchers in neuroscience, neurology, physical medicine, allied health, or bioengineering, will acquire new insights and tools for creative pursuits that aim to physical medicine, allied health, or bioengineering, will acquire new insights and tools for creative pursuits that aim to lessen the disabilities of patients.

Book Description:
This is the first single-authored book to attempt to bridge the gap between aphasia research and the rehabilitation of patients with this language disorder. Studies of the deficits underlying aphasia and the practice of aphasia rehabilitation have often diverged, and the relationship between theory and practice in aphasiology is loose. The goal of this book is to help close this gap by making explicit the relationship between what is to be rehabilitated and how to rehabilitate it.L Early chapters cover the history of aphasia and its therapy from Broca's discoveries to the 1970's, and provide a description of the classic aphasia syndromes. The middle section describes the contribution of cognition neuropsychology and the treatment models it has inspired. It includes discussion of the relationship between the treatment approach and the functional model upon which it is based. The final chapters deal with aphasia therapy. After providing a sketch of a working theory of aphasia, Basso describes intervention procedures for disorders resulting from damage at the lexical and sentence levels as well as a more general conversation-based intervention for severe aphasics.L Anna Basso has run an aphasia rehabilitation unit for more than thirty years. In this book she draws on her considerable experience to provide researchers, clinicians, and their students and trainees with comprehensive coverage of the evolution and state of the art of aphasia research and therapy.

Book Description:
The aim of the Textbook of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation is to provide practical guidance for all cardiologists and other health personnel engaged in the management of cardiac patients. The book will follow the concept of "seamless care service", i.e. a streamlined combination of preventive and rehabilitative methods in order both to add years to life and life to years. It will consist of eight sections.
Commencing with an introductory section it will focus on guidelines, prevention, risk stratification and the evidence base of cardiac rehabilitation. In the following three sections different models for exercise testing and training, nutritional counselling and smoking cessation will be presented. The behavioral section contains health-related quality of life and psychological issues, patient education, compliance and adherence to the treatment program. In the social section the return to work, the role of relatives, heart foundations etc. will be discussed.
Groups with special needs will be highlighted in the seventh section, which will address children with cardiac disease, elderly, women, heart failure and cardiac transplantation patients, patients with ICD or after valve surgery. The final section comprises evaluation options. quality assurance and organisational matters i.e. program design, staff training, safety, documentation and a health-economic cost review; even national program differences will be debated.
Each section will contain a short summary and tables with practical guidance statements. Furthermore, all sections will be formatted as to follow the natural course of cardiovascular disease, starting off with focus on primary preventive care and finishing with the demands on rehabilitation of the patient with advanced disease, thus following the "seamless care" concept.
