Treating Gum Disease Improves Rheumatoid Arthritis Symptoms
EliminatingInflammation Associated With Gum Disease Has Side Benefits
Startingwith childhood, you have been taught to take care of your teeth. Everyone knowsabout the importance of having regular dental check-ups.
Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients Benefit fromDental Care
Research suggests that people who have gum disease andalso have a severe form ofrheumatoidarthritis benefitfrom having their dental problems addressed. A study published in the Journalof Periodontology showed that rheumatoid arthritis patients who receivedconservative treatment for their gum disease had reduced disease activity (asmeasured by self assessment of function, number of swollen joints and levels ofa blood inflammatory marker, ESR) compared with patients not receivingtreatment for their gum disease.
Eliminating Inflammation
The improvement in rheumatoid arthritis symptoms was attributed to the elimination ofinfection and inflammation in the gums. While previous studies have linkedperiodontitis to RA disease activity, this study further suggests treating gumdisease might work by reducing blood TNF-alpha levels.
In both diseases, soft and hard tissue destruction islinked to TNF-alpha, so researchers are hoping that TNF blockers willhelp periodontitis the same way they alleviate joint inflammation and damage inRA.
The Reasons
According to Scott Zashin, MD, "Thereare two important reasons why rheumatoid arthritis patients should not neglecttheir teeth. They don't, however, have to see the dentist more often thananyone else."
Reason #1 - Rheumatoid arthritis patients have anincreased risk of coronary disease -- a disease which is associated withincreased inflammation which can also occur with gingivitis.
Reason #2 - Poor dental hygiene can increase the risk ofinfection and rheumatoid arthritis patients have an increased risk, especiallyif they are on immunosuppressants such as TNF blockers and methotrexate.
