• Less than 50% of researchers regularly verify the identities of their cell lines.
• The German Cell Bank (DSMZ) found up to 29% of 252 lines donated were either misidentified or
cross contaminated.
• The NCI-60 panel – a group of 60 cancer cell lines used for basic research and drug discovery,
contains at least 4 cell lines that are misidentified or mischaracterized.
• JNCI (Journal of the National Cancer Institute) is planning to begin asking authors to confirm that
they have authenticated their lines.
• The Society for In Vitro Biology, the European Tissue Culture Society, and the American Society for Cell
Biology have endorsed imposing rules requiring proof of cell line identity along with manuscripts and
grants..
