Cell Appoints New Editor
Cambridge, Massachusetts (8 October 2003) - The prestigious journal Cell announced today the appointment of Emilie Marcus, PhD, as Editor of Cell and Executive Editor of Cell Press, effective 1 November 2003.
"The search committee chose Dr. Marcus for her editorial vision and open-door, aggressive approach to the scientific community," said Lynne Herndon, president and CEO of Cell Press, the publisher of Cell and eight other peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Dr. Marcus earned a PhD in neurobiology from Yale University and conducted her postdoctoral research in developmental biology at the Salk Institute and University of California at San Diego. She was appointed Editor of Neuron in February 2001.
"I plan to build on Cell's original foundation of excellence - publishing scientific articles that have both immediate impact and longevity," said Dr. Marcus. "By presenting exciting, cutting-edge research in a format accessible to a broad readership, Cell promotes the kind of interdisciplinary thinking that is at the heart of the most important advances in science."
The many major findings published in Cell over the last 30 years include Dr. Robert Horvitz's seminal paper that identifies a genetic program causing cells to die and Dr. Timothy Hunt's work on the mechanisms regulating cell division. Both discoveries have led to recent Nobel Prizes. In the past nine months alone, Cell has published exciting new advances in many important areas, including how cells combat HIV infection and why HIV is able to overcome this defense mechanism in human cells, how embryonic stem cells retain the ability to make all other cell types, and how mammalian sperm recognize the egg.
"Cell papers have proven that they stand the test of time. They have launched many careers," said Dr. Marcus.
According to Nobel Laureate Eric R. Kandel, M.D., Dr. Marcus is a good fit for Cell: "Her judgment, high standards, and deep sense of integrity have brought the journal Neuron to a new level. It is hard to think of anyone more suitable to lead Cell than she."
As Neuron's Editor, Dr. Marcus is noted for expanding the journal's scientific scope, creating an open and accessible editorial office, and introducing new article formats.
