我发第一篇E文的经验：
1有新意。
2文章内容逻辑和条理性好，实验结果自成系统。
3如果没有直接拒稿，就有希望，要根据REVIEWER和EDITOR的意见一条一条的修改。
4我觉得非常重要，找到合适的杂志。有些杂志觉得你的东西毫无新意，而有些杂志却觉得你的文章很有趣。就像不同的女孩子对你的感觉那样。最好找那些边缘杂志，明白吗？
当然，如果你的东西确实好，那就直接找公认的 那些牛杂志投吧。
这是我写的一篇文章，投给‘“Journal of Radiation Research”的文章（IF：1.9），下面是该杂志给我的回复及该杂志的稿约。

我觉得这个杂志对英文要求不是很高，回复也很快，大家有相关的文章可以往那试一下。唯一不爽的是，这是个日本人的杂志。
向国际刊物投稿，不仅课题提高自己的英文写作，也可以听听老外审稿人的意见，以提高自己的论文水平和科研思路（我没有贬国内审稿人的意思）。

EDITORIAL COMMENTS（对第一次修改稿的意见）

We have reviewed your revised version of the manuscript (MS#*** , but we
still think that the present manuscript has not yet reached to the satisfied
level for the publication in JRR. The followings are some points for your
further revision.

1) Please, reconsider about your descriptive sentences in the text. ex. The
word, "normal", should not be used for the NPC cells, because NPC cells are
intrinsically tumor cells. The authors should be more careful about such
sort of description in the text.
2) As it is seen in your response to the reviewers' comments , we don't
understand that why you didn't discuss about the features of growth and
physiological conditions of unmodified *** cells as normal more clearly
and definitely in the text by referring other appropriate reports and papers.
3) The next revision should be more careful by keeping the attention to
those comments raised by Ref. 3 for your first manuscript. Particularly,
more adequate explanation the figure legends and procedures of the
experiments, etc..

Comments for JRR***-revised version

The revised form has made a significant improvement, specifically in English
and data presentation (figures). However, there are a few points still need
to be considered before acceptance.
1. The title is recommended to change to
"Combination of Suicide gene therapy and radiation enhances killing of
***".

2. Materials and Methods: (p.3, line 5 and line 6)
The (--start code) should be (--start codon).

3. Fig. 2:
It is not clear why the authors only show western blot analysis of suicide gene,
but not the other fusion proteins, especially the fusion protein of gene,
which is criitical for experiments shown in Fig. 6.

4. Fig. 6:
The in vivo tumor regression study was carried out by using NPC cell clones
containing individual expressing constructs. The ones showed the most
significant effect are animals injected with NPC cells expressing suicide gene,
and treated with both radiation and 5-FC. No data have been present for the
effect of the HSV-tk and GCV treatment. Therefore, Western blot analysis of
the particular cell clone demonstrates the expression the fusion protein
should be added for clarification.

5. Discussion, p.12, the third paragraph:
The authors say that " ----lowing the dose of radiation and transferring
expressed suicide genes to the tumor locations." No data in this paper
indicate that the radiation dosage experiments have been performed. Besides,
it is "lowering" not "lowing". I will suggest authors add a sentence or two
to discuss this issue.

6. Description written under Figure3 and Figure 4a requires either removal
or rewriting.

7. Abstract:
Lines 1-3 can be separated into two sentences.
Line 8: " analyzed by MTT assay" to replace " analysis by MTT'.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

1. General:
Journal of Radiation Research is the official organ of the Japan Radiation Research
Society (JRRS) and is covered in the Current Contents and Science Citation Index.
Members and non-members of the Society are encoulaged to submit manuscripts.
2. Code of ethics:
Authors are required to follow the ethical procedures in their countries when human
or animal subjects are involved in their research. In the case of reports involving
human subjects, the authors should assure in the manuscript either that the study
has been reviewed and approved by the ethics committee in their institution or that
the anonymity of subjects are preserved. The Code of Ethics of the World Medical
Association (Declaration of Helsinki) represents a minimal requirement. When
experimental animals are used, the authors should assure in the manuscript that the
studies have been reviewed and approved by the committee that oversees the
ethics of research involving the use of animals and the welfare of the animals.
3. Article categories:
The Journal publishes the following article categories.
(1) Original full-length paper: The manuscript should be arranged in the
following order: i) TITLE PAGE, ii) ABSTRACT, iii) INTRODUCTION, iv)
MATERIALS AND METHODS, v) RESULTS, vi) DISCUSSION, vii)
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS, and viii) REFERENCES.
(2) Short communication: This section includes either brief reports dealing
with new methods and techniques or a short manuscript describing results
obtained in selected experiments. Short communications should not exceed
4 printed pages, and are not necessarily processed faster than the other
categories of papers.
(3) Mini-review: The article should be a brief review of topical interests,
generally including references earlier than the past 3 years. Mini-reviews
are either invited or volunteered, and should not exceed a maximum of 5
printed pages.
(4) Review: The article, which is usually invited, should cover recent advances
in radiation research. The manuscript should be set up to exceed more than
10 printed pages.
Manuscripts should be written in English. A review of the linguistic style by a
native English speaker is recommended before submission. The preferred word
processor application is MSWord v.5 or later, and the preferred font is Times New
Roman. Each page should consist of approximately 25-27 lines, with consecutive
page numbers starting from the title page.
4. Preparation of manuscripts
Title page: The following items should be given in order on the first page of
manuscript: (1) Title, (2) Author name, (3) Institution and address, (4)
Running title not exceeding 40 characters including letters and spaces, (5) Key
words up to the maximum of 5 technical terms separated by a slash " / ",
Corresponding author, giving the Phona and Fax numbers and E-mail address of
the author to whom proofs and correspondence should be sent, (7) Foot-notes and
abbreviations, if necessary.
Abstract: Abstract not exceeding 200 words should be placed in the 2nd page
without any other items.
References: References should be cited numerically as they appear in the text. Full
citations are required. Typical forms are:

Figures and Tables: Figures and Tables should be numbered consecutively in
Arabic numerals, e.g., Fig. 1, Fig. 2, and Table, Table 2. Figures and tables should
be designed to fit and to be clearly visible in the printed page within one column
width (~8.3 cm) or two columns (~17.5 cm).
Figures: Each figure should be drawn on a separate page. Figure captions
should be written on a separate page. For paper (hard-copy) manuscript, original
drawings should be categorized to one of the following 3 options; (1) black ink on
tracing paper, (2) high quality glossy photo-prints or (3) computer-generated
output. Hand-written graphs are not acceptable. Figures and photographs must
be submitted in quadruplicate and numbered on the back together with the
author's name and an arrow indicating the top of the figure. Color plates can be
accepted with an extra charge on per page basis.
Tables: Each table should be typed on a separate page. Headings and footnotes
should be self-explanatory.
5. Submission of manuscripts:
An article category (See above) should be selected and stated in a cover letter.
Authors are encouraged to suggest the names of possible reviewers in the cover
letter.
Either electronic submission or paper submission is acceptable. In the latter case,
one original and three copies of the manuscript should be typed on either A4 paper
(21 x 29.7 cm) or international size paper with good quality, and mailed to

Should notification of receipt not arrive within 2 weeks, the author should contact the
journal office.
Electronic submission: A manuscript can be submitted by e-mail in Adobe Acrobat
PDF format. Submitting the manuscript by e-mail reduces shipment costs (there is
no need to send a hard copy) and can result in a faster review. Authors wishing to
submit their manuscripts by e-mail are required to prepare the manuscript in any
word processor using the instruction for the Instructions for Authors given above,
and then convert the manuscript (including figures and tables) into PDF. It is
necessary to embed all the fonts that are used in text, tables and figures. Tables and
figures should not be locked and could be modifiable for the printing procedure.
Before submission, the author should print the PDF manuscript to make sure that all
tables and figures are properly visible. Photographs that require a high resolution in
the print could be asked later to be sent by snail mail.
Final version: For paper submission, snail mail should include (1) two hard copies
of the final version and (2) electronic files for manuscript, tables, and figures, either
in a 3.5 inch disk or in a CD-ROM. The media should be labeled with (1) the
corresponding author's name, (2) the name of the file, (3) the word processor
operating system (Macintosh, Windows, etc.) and software. It is important that the
file on the media and the printout (hard copy) are identical. The author should
submit the final version within 2 weeks from the request.
6. Reprints:
Thirty non-covered reprints will be sent to the corresponding author without charge.
An additional order of reprints, that will be charged as shown below, can be made by
filling the reprint order form to be sent together with the galley proofs.
7. Page charge:
The responsible author will be charged the total cost of page charge (¥ 5,000 /
printed page) plus the additional reprints. The author is required to inform us of
payment method in the order form. The payment could be either reduced or delayed,
depending on the authors' financial condition. There will be no discrimination against
papers for which page charges are not paid.
8. Internet:

Manuscripts containing original material relevant to the genetic, molecular or cellular basis of disease are considered for publication if neither the article nor any part of its essential substance, tables, or figures has been or will be published or submitted elsewhere before appearing in Molecular Medicine.

Contributors are encouraged to provide the names of at least two Editorial Board members (view list) who are knowledgeable in the manuscript's scientific area and able to suggest potential reviewers. Closely related papers that are in press or that have been submitted elsewhere should also be provided. Upon receipt of an author's submission, the manuscript deemed suitable for the journal will be assigned to a member of the Editorial Board who has agreed to undertake its rapid review, soliciting the opinions of independent referees. After review, the Editors will move to accept, reject or invite a revised submission depending on the novelty, scholarship and general appeal of the work to a broad audience.

Following acceptance of a manuscript, contributors will receive page proofs within a few weeks. Contributors will receive 50 free offprints; additional offprints must be ordered when the page proofs are returned to the production office. Offprint orders will be processed once the manuscript is published and payment received.

Contributors must submit their manuscripts online. Authors must create an account (or, for previous Molecular Medicine authors or reviewers, check for an existing account) at the Molecular Medicine online submission site:

The submission system asks for information about the manuscript as noted below, after which contributors will need to upload files related to their submission. While online submission can accommodate a variety of file types, authors are urged to provide their manuscripts, complete with tables, figures, and figure legends, in a single PDF file. (Related manuscripts, figures, or other files should be uploaded separately, and they need not be provided as PDFs.) Authors should note that the system allows authors to designate whether material is intended for review by referees. In any case, authors are responsible for providing PDFs and other files that are suitable for review.

A cover letter should identify the person (with address and telephone/fax number/email) responsible for administrative/scientific issues concerning the manuscript; the letter should make it clear that the submitted manuscript has been seen and approved by all authors, that they have taken due care to ensure the integrity of the work, and, where applicable, that the national and institutional policies of humane care and use of laboratory animals have been abided by conscientiously.

Format of original articles

The entire manuscript should be double-spaced with the format following the Council of Biology Editors Style Manual. There is no limit on length or on the number of figures and tables, but the total word count for each article should not exceed 7000; this count includes the abstract, body, references, and tables/figures, with each table/figure counted as 250 words. Each page should be labeled with the first author's name and a page number. The standardized format will be Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References, Figure Legends and Tables. Each section should be started on a new page.

Title and authors' names. The title page should include: title of the paper (15 words or less); a shortened version of the title for use as a running head (maximum 45 letter spaces); the name of the author, including the first name; the name of the department and institution in which the work was done; the institutional affiliation of each author; and the name, address, telephone, fax number and email address of the author responsible for correspondence. Five MeSH-Medline key words not included in the title should be listed.

Abstract. The Abstract (250 words) should include the rationale, objectives, results and conclusions of the study. The Abstract should read as a single, continuous piece and must not be broken into separate sections.

Acknowledgements. Sources of financial support should be included along with any acknowledgements relevant to scientific advice or assistance.

Footnotes. Footnotes should be restricted to the title page (affiliations, corresponding author) and within tables. Footnotes in the title page are assigned consecutive superscript numbers (i.e., 1, 2, 3, etc.). Footnotes in tables are assigned consecutive, superscript capital letters (i.e., A, B, C, etc.).

References. References should be numbered consecutively as they are cited in the text and listed in parentheses. References first cited in tables or figure legends must be numbered so that they will be in sequence with references in the text. References should include full titles of the papers with inclusive page numbers. All authors should be listed when there are seven or fewer; when there are eight or more, the first three should be listed followed by "et al.'' Abbreviate the names of journals according to PubMed. Spell out names of unlisted journals. Do not number references to personal communications, unpublished data, and manuscripts either in preparation or submitted for publication. If essential, such material may be incorporated in the appropriate place in the text. Manuscripts listed as in press should be numbered, but a copy of the text should be submitted to the Editor. Personal communications or unpublished observations can be cited in the text, but must be accompanied with a written permission.

Policies

Publication in Molecular Medicine implies that readily replaceable material described in the paper will be freely distributed to qualified academic researchers. Nucleic acid and protein sequences should be deposited in an appropriate databank in time for the accession number to be included in the paper.

下面是审稿人给我的拒稿意见：

审稿人一：
In essence, this is not a review paper. It is an experimental study. The English is very poor and it is extremely difficult to read. However, the authors have 5 human source suicide gene therapy vectors and tested them in vivo and in vitro, with and without prodrugs, with and without radiation. Included is a radiation-inducible promoter linked to a CMV enhancer. The systems are not novel. The only novelty is testing the constructs in NPC cells, although I have doubts about wanting to use this approach in this disease, which is radiosensitive in any case. The cells were transfected and stable expressors, which has little relevance to the clinic. Delivery is still the major hinderance of this type of therapy. Radiation-inducible promoters need to have low background activity and be strongly inducible. This is sometimes achieved, but the vectors used in this study did not seem to be ideal from these points of view. The combination of gene therapy with radiation showed little promise in vivo, above either approach alone. In short, the study does not add much to what is already known and the presentation is very poor.

审稿人二：
They introduced suicide genes (five promoter/gene combinations) in a nasopharyngeal carcinoma cell line, established one stable cell line for each of five expression cassettes, and analyzed the sensitivity of these cell clones to the corresponding pro drug and/or radiation in tissue culture and in nude mice transplanted with these cell lines. Maybe something new in this paper is the radiation-responsive Egr-1 promoter they used in combination with these suicide genes in a nasopharyngeal carcinoma cell line (Egr-1 promoter, of course, was already used before in different gene therapy settings). However, what they have done are very primitive as gene therapy experiments. They used only stable cell clones to test the efficacy of their strategy, but there is no in vitro or in vivo gene transfer involved. Furthermore, the manuscript was poorly written, and it was difficult for me to read through. The manuscript has to be proofread/edited extensively.
