An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay is used to detect particular antigens in a patient. Their sample is added to the well, and time is allowed for all of the antigens present within it to bind to the inside of the well. Next, antibodies marked with an enzymatic tag are added to the wells, specific for the particular antigen being tested for. If the antigen is present, the antibody will bind to it. Washing removes any unbound antibodies. Finally, a substrate that will change color from reaction with the enzyme is added to each well. A color change shows the presence of the antigen being tested for.
