牙科简明医学问答
Q: What is dentistry?
A: Dentistry is the branch of medicine concerned with preventing, diagonsing, and treating diseases of teeth and adjacent oral structures and restoring missing teeth and oral structures.

Q:Can a physician or a surgeon practice dentistry without special training?
A:No.The person who practices dentistry is called a dentist and must have a thorough knowledge of th structure ,growth, function, and disease of the mouth,as well as of medical, surgical, and mechanical treatment. The dentist must also understand the relationship of the mouth to other parts of the body and how general body disease may be reflected by disorders in the mouth.

Q:Why should dentistry become a special branch of medicine?
A:Because dentistry has its special features different from the other medical branches.Diseases of the teeth and surrounding parts of the mouth constitute a major health problem.

Q:Can dental disease be fatal?
A:Few patients die as a direct result of dental diseases, but considerable suffering is directly attributed to bad teeth and diseased gums.Rampant dental caries or cavities in children result in facial deformities in adulthood and may contribute to bacterial contamination of the blood,or bacteremia.Bacteremia, in turn, may contribute to the development of bacterial endocarditis, which is a bacterial infection of the tissue lining of the heart.

Q:What causes tooth decay?
A:Bacteria cause thooth decay and gum disease.Gum disease and cavities were finally proved by the early 1960s to have a common origin:a tenacious deposit on the teeth called dental plaque.Cavities appear to form when sugra in the diet enters the plaque and is broken dowm bacterially into acids, which eventually erode the protective on the tooth surface.Plaque may also lead to gum disease and to the loss of teeth even without cavities.

Q:How about the mdeciations usede in dental treatments?
A:Reasearch has improved the medications used in dental care.Antibiotics are now available for preventing or eliminating infections that were once quite difficult to manage.New techniques have greatly reduced the need for oral surgery, for example , in the treatment of severe gum diseases.Dentists also have many anesthetics to prevent pain.Local anesthetics, such as Novocain and Xylocaine ,are the most common.

Q:What sort of materials are used for restoring or filling teeth?
A:Materials used for restoring or filling teeth include gold, silver, synthetic porcelain, and acrylic resins. The ideal filling material has not yet been developed.Current research is seeking a material that will fuse or bond with the tooth so that it cannot be dislodged, and that will have the appearance and durability of natural enamel.

Q:Are there special fields in dentistry?
A:Yes.Some of the special fields include oral surgery, orthodontics, periondontics, pedodontics, and prosthodontics.Oral surgery includes procedures from tooth extraction to major surgery for tumors of the mouth or jaw,for fractures and dislocations of the face and jaw bones, and for repair of cleft lip and cleft palate.Orthondontics includes the preventions and correction of misaligned teeth, improper meshing of the upper and lower teeth when the jaws are closed.Prosthodontics,or prosthectic dentistry, involves the making of dentures or other artificial replacement.
