Not all patients are equally at-risk for developing delirium. Risk factors are commonly divided into preexisting and precipitating factors. Preexisting risk factors including older age, male sex, hypertension, a smoking history [40,41 &], the presence of existing cognitive impairment including dementia or depression, and previous history of delirium markedly increase the risk of developing delirium. The presence of visual or hearing impairments, history of falls, immobility, functional dependence and poor dietary intake are also contributing factors.
