MedWire News: Eating fish in the first 9 months of life is associated with a reduced risk for allergic rhinitis symptoms in children, results from a Swedish study suggest.
Reporting the results at the Congress of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology in London, UK, lead researcher Emma Goksör (University of Gothenburg) explained: “Both hereditary factors and early feeding procedures may affect the risk of later allergic disease. The aim of this study was to analyze early risk factors and protective factors for allergic rhinitis at preschool age.”
Goksör and team assessed data from a study of 4496 children who were followed-up between birth in 2003 and the age of 4.5 years. The children’s parents completed questionnaires on allergies, lifestyle, and their children’s feeding patterns at the age of 6 months, 1, and 4.5 years.
At the age of 4.5 years, 5.5% of children had suffered from allergic rhinitis symptoms in the past year (current allergic rhinitis), and 1.7 % had been diagnosed with the condition.
After accounting for a family history of allergies and other risk factors, the researchers found that children whose diets had included fish before the age of 9 months were significantly less likely to suffer from current allergic rhinitis at the age of 4.5 years than those whose diets had not included fish during early life, at an odds ratio (OR) of 0.6.
Factors associated with an increased risk for current allergic rhinitis included having a parent with rhinitis (OR=1.9), male gender (OR=2.0), and having eczema (OR=2.8), or doctor-diagnosed food allergy (OR= 1.8), during the first year of life, as well as treatment with antibiotics in the neonatal period (OR=1.8).
Factors associated with an increased risk for doctor-diagnosed allergic rhinitis included having a parent with rhinitis (OR=2.7), male gender (OR=2.1), and having eczema (OR=2.9), or recurrent wheeze (OR=3.2), during the first year of life.
Goksör concluded: “Previously, beneficial effects on the prevalence of allergic disease by early introduction of fish have been reported. We now find that introduction of fish before the age of 9 months decreased the risk of allergic rhinitis in preschool age.”
She added: “There is no rationale for delaying the introduction of solids into a baby’s diet.
“Don’t wait too long too long to give fish to a baby as we believe that it could help reduce the risk of allergies and eczema later in life.”
