Study: Direct link between sleep disorder, heart disease

NEW DELHI: The quality of your sleep decides the health of your heart. A clear connection has now been established between snoring and heart diseases. Nearly 60% of those who snore suffer from sleep apnea, a debilitating breathing disorder that results in cessation of breathing for 10 seconds, at least five times per hour of sleep.

Untreated sleep apnea causes life-threatening conditions like high blood pressure, ultimately causing heart attacks and stroke. It also increases risk of diabetes, impotency and irregular heartbeats.

Researchers in Brazil have now found that treating patients who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) dramatically reduces early indications of atherosclerosis in just months. This latest finding links OSA directly to the hardening or narrowing of the arteries for the first time. Until now, no study had demonstrated a direct relation between the two. "OSA is independently associated with risk of fatal cardiovascular events that can be reversed by treatment with CPAP," wrote Luciano Drager of the University of Sco Paulo Medical School in Brazil.

Nasal CPAP delivers air into your airway through a specially designed pillow. The mask does not breathe for you, the flow of air creates enough pressure when you inhale to keep your airway open. CPAP is considered the most effective non-surgical treatment for alleviation of snoring and OSA. A CPAP machine increases air pressure in throat so that your airway does not collapse when you breathe in. The research will be published in the first issue of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, published by the American Thoracic Society.

The study should wake up the 36 million Indians suffering from OSA. Interventional cardiologist Purushottam Lal said: "Those who are obese, snore excessively and suffer from hypertension are at higher risk of OSA. Reducing weight alone can provide a huge relief
